Williams is working with an NFT artist to raise money for mental health charity

Last week, it was announced the launch of a NFT project by Robin Williams’ son, Zak Williams, and Jesus Martínez, an NTF artist.  The project was launched to honor Robin Williams, with the proceeds to go to mental health services for low-income young people.

Robin Williams was a famous actor and comedian. During his career, the comedian suffered from a battle with addiction and poor mental health.

In the early part of his career, the actor was on drugs, specifically cocaine, but quit them after the birth of his son. He was sober for 20 years, but unfortunately, it did not last.

He started drinking again in 2003. He drank alcohol in excess for three years before he checked himself back into rehab in 2006. He also suffered from bipolar disorder. In July of 2014, Williams checked himself into rehab once more in an effort to focus on his commitment to sobriety.

The actor died by suicide the same year, after struggling with mental health issues and Lewy body dementia, a type of progressive dementia that decline in thinking, reasoning and independent function.

Nowadays, his son, Zak Williams is an active investor in several companies and he’s the creator of an organization called Bring Change to Mind, which is focused on mental health-related issues. The son’s actor says he wants to build a “web 3.0 community focused on mental health.”

On the other hand, Martinez is an NFT artist.  Martinez, in an interview with the Block, said «We (Martinez and Zak) bonded over stories about our dads. He saw his father struggle with mental health, and I see my father struggle with that. So, we related to that and our similar childhoods.”

Williams and Martinez decided that they would sell one of Martinez’s pieces, and the money raised would go to Bring Change to Mind. The NFT is going live Friday on the SuperRare marketplace, a digital market on Ethereum, for a twenty-four hour period.

About the project, Williams said the money raised by Bring Change to Mind will actually go to supporting communities in low-income.

«My dad loves hearts. He always thinks of love and light.» Said the actor’s son. » And I wanted to fully immerse myself in Robin Williams’s world. The best way to describe him was… in every film in every way possible he always tried to spread love and that’s how the artwork came to be — from darkness grows love»

With the recent interest in NFTs, the NFT market place has also become a “go to” for raising funds. “Giving Block”, for example, is one platform that accepts crypto donations.  There were also collaborations with NFT artists and nonprofits partnering in fundraising campaigns.
