Amazon, Meta, Microsoft and Google, the four giants in dispute.

These four technological powerhouses are in an arduous race for leadership of the metaverse. Who is leading the way so far is Meta, the company has already filed applications with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, focused on offering services based on blockchain, cryptocurrencies and Web3.

Goal and its progress

Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has shown interest in including derivatives of blockchain technology in the metaverse that is already under construction. In the applications submitted, products linked to augmented reality and artificial intelligence also appear.

Meta wants to promote new use cases for the virtual world and they are doing so by integrating advertising and entertainment services based on virtual reality, video games and much more.

Amazon and its video games

On the other hand, Amazon, the largest cloud service provider in the world today, has created its own Metaverse to educate its users about its public cloud computing services, through which users can learn and develop your skills in the public cloud in a practical and free way.

In this sense, the company is implementing the Metaverse as a space for professional growth and development, promoting education accessible to anyone from its new immersive role-playing game, called AWS Cloud Quest.

Said game allows students to travel through a virtual city to solve puzzles, practice exercises, complete simulations and missions and thereby collect points and rewards.

Microsoft and Google video calls

Microsoft is the other competitor in the industry that decided to adapt the idea of the metaverse to its model, the «company metaverse»,

Last November 2021, the company announced the launch of “Mesh”, (Mesh for Teams), a new function of the Teams program that, starting in 2022, will allow the user to appear in meetings in the form of a personalized avatar instead of to activate the video.

According to Microsoft’s official website, the feature combines the mixed reality capabilities of Microsoft Mesh, which allows people in different physical locations to join in collaborative and shared holographic experiences with the productivity tools of Teams, where people can join virtual meetings, send chats, collaborate on shared documents and more.

The giant of internet searches, Google, has not been left behind in innovations, in mid-2021, it has presented its new video call project, called Project Starline. This is a service that will allow communication between two people, located in different physical spaces, through such a realistic and 3D hologram.

Google has defined the service as «looking through a kind of magic window and, through that window, seeing another person, life-size and in three dimensions».

At the moment, this project is only available for some offices where they are testing their services with the specialized teams. However, Google plans to release the tool to the public in a short period of time.

Although this technology is not available to the general public (especially because of its high price), Google hopes to reach all markets and be able to position itself as one of the largest in the metaverse.
