Konami says it will continue to sell NFTs as a method of ‘preservation’

‘We will continue to sell non-fungible tokens (NFT) in the form of commemorative art in an effort to preserve content,’ the company says in its latest financial report.

We are in financial reporting season and it helps us to know what plans companies have going forward. At a time like this, when the industry is torn between advocates and detractors of NFT and play-to-earn, such reports are littered with mentions of these controversial technologies: Nintendo, for example, has reflected interest in blockchain in its document, although it is still reluctant to see benefits for gamers. Konami has also mentioned the topic in its report to reinforce its pro-NFT position.

In fact, in Konami’s financial results report we can read that the company intends to continue selling NFTs, a strategy it kicked off earlier this month with a collection dedicated to the Castlevania anniversary. In the company’s own words, its motives for selling NFT are related to preservation: «We will continue to sell non-fungible tokens (NFT) in the form of commemorative art in an effort to preserve content that has received love from our customers».

The NFTs Konami has offered for sale so far have been small videos of iconic levels from early Castlevania installments, such as Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse or Castlevania: Simon’s Quest. They are a kind of three-dimensional cubes that reproduce inside a brief sequence of some of the screens of those iconic video games, gameplays of just three minutes with which Konami earned more than $162,000 ten days after putting them on sale along with an original illustration and two posters of the franchise.

Konami is one of those companies that wants to remain in the NFT market despite the controversy it generates in the community, a position similar to Ubisoft or Square Enix, but far from other companies like Team17 or Electronic Arts, which have left this technology aside due to the criticism received after its announcement.
